In the 112th United States Congress, in office during 2011 and 2012, there were 51 Democratic senators, 47 Republican senators, and only 2 Independent senators, which almost always caucused with Democrats.

But, even in case the Independents chose to vote with the Republicans, the Republican side wouldn't be able to pass any bill by their own, as they wouldn't reach the necessary majority to do so.
