There are multiple meanings for this word so it depends on what type of definition you are asking for. 

Speaking biologically, proliferation is the speedy reproduction of an organism or cell. 
In other definitions, it means a great number of things or the multiplication of the amount of something. Nuclear proliferation is also the division of nuclear weapons
