Over the course of 15 years (1498–1513), Leonardo da Vinci designed organs and elements of the anatomofunctional systems of the human body in a study that began by reading the works of pre-Renaissance medicine authors such as Galen of Pergamon (129-200 ), Mondino dei Luzzi (1270-1326) and Avicenna (980-1037).
