X + 2y = 10 becomes  x + 2(2x-4) = 10.  Thus, x + 4x - 8 = 10, and 5x = 18.

Hi there!

In order to solve for x and y here, we'll be using a cool thing called substitution! First, we'll substitute the value of y into the second equation.

Value of y = 2x - 4
Substituting: x + 2(2x - 4) = 10
Distribute: x + 4x - 8 = 10
Solve: 5x - 8 = 10
5x = 18
x = 18/5 or 3.6

Now, we'll use the value of x and substitute that in to the first equation and solve for y.

Value of x = 18/5 or 3.6
Substituting: y = 2(3.6) - 4
Solve: y = 7.2 - 4
y = 3.2 or 16/5

Hope this helps!! :)

Arabica coffee costs $28 per pound and Robusta coffee
Soloha48 [4]

Given parameters:

Cost per pound of Arabica coffee  = $28 per pound

Cost of Robusta coffee = $8.75

Given number of pounds of Robusta Coffee = 3 pounds

Total cost of blend per pound = $15.50

Unknown:

Number of pounds of Arabica coffee  = ?

Solution:

Let the number of pounds of Arabica coffee  = A;

  We have to interpret this problem algebraically and solve;

  28A + 8.75(3) = 15.5(A + 3)

Now solve the expression above for A;

       28A + 26.25 = 15.5A + 46.5

       28A - 15.5A  = 46.5 - 26.25

          12.5A = 20.25

                 A  = 1.62

Number of pounds of Arabica Coffee is 1.62 pound

Ivan has 15 yards of green felt and 12 yards of blue felt to make 3 quilts. If Ivan uses the same total number of yards for each
Amanda [17]
You're just dividing the total yards of each felt evenly across the 3 quilts. 15/3 and 12/3 mean Ivan will use 5 yards of green felt and 4 yards of blue felt per quilt, for a total of 9 yards per quilt.
