X + 2y = 10 becomes  x + 2(2x-4) = 10.  Thus, x + 4x - 8 = 10, and 5x = 18.

In order to solve for x and y here, we'll be using a cool thing called substitution! First, we'll substitute the value of y into the second equation.

Value of y = 2x - 4
Substituting: x + 2(2x - 4) = 10
Distribute: x + 4x - 8 = 10
Solve: 5x - 8 = 10
5x = 18
x = 18/5 or 3.6

Now, we'll use the value of x and substitute that in to the first equation and solve for y.

Value of x = 18/5 or 3.6
Substituting: y = 2(3.6) - 4
Solve: y = 7.2 - 4
y = 3.2 or 16/5

AC = 50, DE = 30, EC = 25, BE = x, BC = 25 + x

To find the value of x:

Property of similar triangles:

If two triangles are similar then the corresponding angles are congruent and the corresponding sides are in proportion.

$\frac{BE}{BC} =\frac{DE}{AC}

$\frac{x}{25+x} =\frac{30}{50}

Do cross multiplication, we get

50x=30(25+x)

50x=750+30x

Subtract 30x from both sides of the equation.

20x=750

Divide by 20 on both sides of the equation, we get

x = 37.5 (or) \frac{75}{2}

Hence the value of x is 37.5 or \frac{75}{2}.
