The subject refers to the thing, person or animal that performs the main action (the doer) or that is being described, in other words, it is what is being dealt with in the sentence. A sentence normally begins with a subject and a verb, however, this order may be reversed, such as in the sentence "Uncomfortable was the beauty queen’s ride atop the float": it first has the main verb + an adjective + the subject + other modifiers. In this case, the subject is "the beauty queen’s ride" because it is what is being talked about.
