When Ernest Rutherford aimed a beam of particles at a thin gold foil he expected that the particles would be deflected slightly after passing through the foil.

Further Explanation;

An atom

 • An atom is the smallest particle of an element that takes part in a chemical reaction.
 • It is made up of a nucleus and energy levels.
 • Atoms contain sub atomic particles; electrons found in the energy levels, neutrons and protons found in the nucleus of the atom.
 • Electrons are negatively charged, protons are positively charged while neutrons have no charge.
 • The positive charge of protons gives nucleus a positive charge which attracts the opposite charged electrons.

Rutherford Experiment

 • Rutherford carried out an experiment where he fired alpha particles at a piece of gold foil.
 • He found that about 1/800 of the alpha particles fired bounced back off of the gold foil.
 • He therefore, concluded that there was a part of the atom that was very dense, and that there was also lots of empty spaces.
 • According to Rutherford's model an atom contains a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by electrons that travel in circular orbits around the nucleus similar to the structure of the Solar system.

Shortcoming of Rutherford's model

 • Rutherford's model of the atom failed to explain why electrons were not pulled into the atomic nucleus by the attraction of opposite charges of the nucleus and electrons.

Answer:

A) The acceleration is zero

B) The total distance is 112 m

Explanation:

Velocity vs Time Graph

It shows the behavior of the velocity as time increases. If the velocity increases, then the acceleration is positive, if the velocity decreases, the acceleration is negative, and if the velocity is constant, then the acceleration is zero.

The graph shows a horizontal line between points A and B. It means the velocity didn't change in that interval. Thus the acceleration in that zone is zero.

A. To calculate the acceleration, we use the formula:

\displaystyle a=\frac{v_2-v_1}{t_2-t_1}

Let's pick the extremes of the region AB: (0,8) and (12,8). The acceleration is:

\displaystyle a=\frac{8-8}{12-0}=0

This confirms the previous conclusion.

B. The distance covered by the body can be calculated as the area behind the graph. Since the velocity behaves differently after t=12 s, we'll split the total area into a rectangle and a triangle.

Area of rectangle= base*height=12 s * 8 m/s = 96 m

Area of triangle= base*height/2 = 4 s * 8 m/s /2= 16 m

The total distance is: 96 m + 16 m = 112 m

liq [111]

Answer: Reduction in skin resistance as a result of increased perspiration leading to conduction.

Explanation:

A lie detector is a machine used to detect when someone is lying.

This is so because when an individual lies, there is an increase in heart beat which causes an increase in sweating. As the the individual sweats there is a reduction in the resistance at skin surface leading to current conduction across the connected cables.
