The bystander effect explains people are less likely to help others in situations there are multiple witnesses or bystanders; this occurs because people transfer their responsibility to others, believe they should only help relatives, friends or close people or do not understand the importance of acting. Therefore this phenomenon does not explain how people conform or change their behavior to fit in a context but the willingness of people to help a victim in cases there are more people around.
