In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson considers the following truths to be self-evident: 1) That all men are created equal; 2) That they are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” 3) He then specifies these rights as - the right to life, 4) the right to liberty and 5) the right to "the pursuit of happiness." Though the English philosopher (John Locke) that probably influenced Jefferson's thoughts and words put it this way - the right to life, the right to liberty, and the right to property (or estate), instead of 'the pursuit of happiness.'
