Madison supports a republican government because he believes that men of integrity who put the greater good first would be elected.

Madison proposed to create of a large republic in order to control the effects of factions. In a large republic people could have a wide range of opinions and interests, and could elect more competent representatives than in a small republic. Madison believed that people would elect "men of integrity who put the greater good first".   He claimed that if a body of representatives with different interests where the only ones who voted for laws, it would be easier to act according to society's interest, and not for self-interest.
