When they are on the ER it is called rough ER (because of its sandpaper like appearence). Rough ER makes proteins either for inside the cell (to another organell) or outside the cell. If the ER does not have ribosomes, it is smooth ER. Smooth ER makes lipidds and steroids.</span>
