The formation of the Caribbean Islands was primarily due to volcanic action at the plate boundaries that lie in the adjacent seas. Due to the subduction of one of the plates, magma was formed below the surface of the Earth in the region and erupted in the form of lava to form the Caribbean Islands.

The formation of coral islands is also similar which includes growing of fringing reef around the volcanic mountain which undergoes subduction. When the mountain is eroded under the surface of the water, then it forms coral islands.
