At first Matt has 5 books, so initially the number of books 'y' is:

y = 5

And then every week he checked 1 book, so when 'x' number of weeks passed he checked (we multiply the number of books per week by the number of weeks 'x'):

1*x = x    number of books

this 'x' books are adiotional to the initial 5 books that he had.

So After x weeks he will still have the 5 initial books plus 'x' more books,

this gives us the equation that describes the total number of books:

y = 5 + x
