<em>"How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York" </em>was a book published in 1890 by Jacob A. Riis. It is famous for documenting the poverty, hunger, homelessness and misery that plagued large cities during the Industrial Revolution. Riis was a Danish immigrant who moved to New York in 1870. His book contained pictures, sketches and graphic descriptions of the living conditions he found and was very significant in motivating the government to provide social assistance to those in need.
