The body, that of humans for example, is primarily made up of cells. These cells are either used for continuous growth by mitosis or in producing sex cells or gametes. Those cell used primarily for growth and not involved in reproduction are called SOMATIC cells while those involved in creating reproductive cells are called GERMLINE cells.

Germ cells are diploid (2n) cells going only in reproductive organs (ovary, testes) when they undergo mitotic and meiotic divisions to eventually produce haploid (n) gametes. Germ cells are the precursors of gametes i.e. the cells in which gametes are produced from.
