How many moles of methanol must be added to 4.50 kg of water to lower its freezing point to -10.0 ∘c? for each mole of solute, t
Svetach [21]
We use the concept on colligative properties to calculate the number of moles in the system above. We calculate as follows:

ΔT = -kf(m)

where ΔT is the change in freezing point, kf is the freezing point depression and m is the molality of the solution.

-10 = -1.86(m)
m = 5.37 mol/kg

number of moles = 5.37 (4.50) = 24.19 moles of methanol

A voltaic cell is based on the following two half-reactions: ni 2(aq) 2e− → ni(s) e° = −0. 25 v cr 3(aq) 3e– → cr(s) e° = –0. 74
emmasim [6.3K]

The net cell reaction is given as 3 Ni²⁺ (aq) + 2 Cr (s) = 2 Cr³⁺ (aq) + 3 Ni (s), and the cell potential is 0.49 V.

What is a half-cell reaction?

A half cell reaction is given as the oxidation or the reduction reaction that takes place at each of the anode or the cathode, forming the net redox reaction.

The cell potential and the half-reactions are:

Ni²⁺ + 2e⁻ = Ni (s)     E° = -0.25 V

Cr³⁺ + 3e⁻ = Cr (s)     E° = -0.74 V

The anodic reaction is given as:

Cr (s) = Cr³⁺ + 3e⁻     E° = 0.74 V

The cathodic reaction is given as:

Ni²⁺ + 2e⁻ = Ni (s)     E° = -0.25 V

Thus, the net reaction of the cell will be:

3 Ni²⁺ (aq) + 2 Cr (s) = 2 Cr³⁺ (aq) + 3 Ni (s)

The cell potential can be calculated as:

E° = E (cathode) + E (anode)

E° = 0.74 + (-0.25) V

E° = 0.49 V

Thus, the net cell reaction is given as 3 Ni²⁺ (aq) + 2 Cr (s) = 2 Cr³⁺ (aq) + 3 Ni (s), and the cell potential is 0.49 V.

predict an element that would react with water as lithium (Li), sodium (Na), and potassium (K) did. explain.
Alexeev081 [22]
Any of the other alkali metals not mentioned (I.e. rubidium, caesium or francium). They are all group one metals meaning that they contain one valence (outer shell) electron so they will have similar properties. Francium is the most reactive alkali metal while lithium is the least reactive (if you’d like me to explain that let me know :) )
