Answer:

The First Opium War took place from 1839 to 1842. It faced the Qing Dynasty and the British Empire, and broke out as a result of the differences between both countries regarding opium trafficking, as the Chinese wanted to prohibit this activity, that was very profitable for the British. The war began with the British Expeditionary Fleet shelling Guangdong Kowloon and finally defeating  the Qing Dynasty, ending with the signing of the Treaty of Nanking, which granted European powers free access to Chinese ports. This war was the first large-scale war initiated by Western countries against China. The war opened the door to China's retreat, and marked the beginning of China's modern history.

Explanation:

Treaty of Nanjing, (August 29, 1842) treaty that ended the first Opium War, the first of the unequal treaties between China and foreign imperialist powers. China paid the British an indemnity, ceded the territory of Hong Kong, and agreed to establish a “fair and reasonable” tariff. British merchants, who had previously been allowed to trade only at Guangzhou (Canton), were now permitted to trade at five “treaty ports” and with whomever they pleased (see Canton system). The treaty was supplemented in 1843 by the British Supplementary Treaty of the Bogue, which allowed British citizens to be tried in British courts and granted Britain any rights in China that China might grant to other countries
