Great Zimbabwe was the heart of a thriving trading empire from 11 the to 15th centuries. Its economy was based on the trade of gold on the coast of the Indian ocean, animal husbandry and crop cultivation. Great Zimbabwe was abandoned during the 15th century and with it, the stone working and pottery-making techniques also vanished. The Portuguese explorers were the first to encounter the ruins.
