After the French defeat the French government resigned and a new government took over. This new government wanted and end to the conflict in Indo China. Within a short period of time the 1954 Geneva Accords the French agreed to remove all their forces from Indo China. These accords also divided Viet Nam at the 17th parallel with a communist government in the north and emporer Bao Dai in the south. This division and subsequent lack of elections as stipulated in the accords led to American involment in the Viet Nam war.
