Dr. Sammons has been stealthily performing a PheWAS experiment in all of his ABIO 329 classes. He genotypes all of the members o

f the class and then asks what genotypes are associated with certain phenotypes. There are 132 students in the class and Dr. Sammon measures these phenotypes directly after the final exam. For each of the three phenotypes being measured, describe if you think Dr. Sammons will ultimately link genotype to phenotype why? Answer:

No, I don't think so.

Explanation:

I don’t think that Dr. Sammons will ultimately link genotype to phenotype because all the traits of an individual cannot be linked to the genes.

Genotype represents the genetic make-up of an individual while the phenotype represents the observable characteristics from an individual, either due to environment or genotype.

For example, certain behaviours in people are due to environment and external factors, not necessarily genes. In addition, resting heart rate may be linked to the genes but it will also depend on other factors in the body such as any heart condition or disease. However, height will be linked to the genes majorly but nutrition also plays major role.

So, it will be impossible to link happiness with the genes. On the other hand, resting heart rate and height may be linked to the genes up to a large extent.

Which of the following does NOT involve the hypothalamic-pituitary axis of hormone function regulation?
konstantin123 [22]

Answer:

(D). oxytocin.

Explanation:

The hypothalamic-pituitary axis can be defined a pathway that plays a central role in regulation of various endocrine glands. Hormones released from hypothalamus stimulates pituitary gland, which in turns secrete pituitary hormones to regulate release of hormones from other endocrine glands.

Regulation of growth hormone (somatotropin), cortisol (adrenal hormone), prolactin, and T3 (thyroid hormone) is done by hypothalamic-pituitary axis.

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone, which is synthesized by hypothalamus and secreted by posterior pituitary gland. However, level of oxytocin is regulated by positive feedback in loop, in which hormone itself regulates its release and does not involves regulation by hypothalamic-pituitary axis.

Thus, the correct answer is option (D).
