John Marshall was the chief of justice of the US Supreme court from 1801 to 1835. Through his decisions, he expanded the role of the Federal government and the basis for economic growth.

In Gibbons v. Odgen, the Court held that the power to regulate interstate commerce was granted to Congress by the Commerce Clause of the Constitution.
