For the presidential candidate to win there should be 270 electoral votes.  There are actually 538 possible electoral votes. The 538 electors are the different states’ representatives in the Electoral College. The number of electors’ bases is the state’s population.  This is the same basis for Congress’ representation.

The jobs were different because of the climate. One type of climate made it possible to grow cotton, another to grow tobacco, another for crops, and so on. They were important because they were free. Since wealthy land owners didn't have to pay workers, they got extremely rich because they had almost no losses at all.
