Two factors that contribute to the variety in Caribbean music are the Spanish colonial history and African ancestry. Africans we’re forcefully brought to the Caribbean (known then as the West Indies) and influenced the islands with their drum beats. The Spanish settlers introduced an entirely different sound. These fused together with other factors to create that smooth Caribbean music.
