FEMA stands for Federal Emergency Management Agency and the main goal of the agency is to provide support to citizens in case of an emergency situation. FEMA also works on improving the capability and capacity of the first responders in responding, recovering and mitigating emergency situation and hazards. FEMA was brought under the Department of Homeland Security in 2003 as after 9/11 it was felt that all such emergency response departments should be under Homeland Security for effective response. Since Hurricane Katrina, FEMA has improved its' disaster management and community assistance aspects greatly with the help of additional authority and efficient response mechanism provided to them by the Congress.
