The energy a charge has due to its position relative to other charges.

An air track car with a mass of 0.75 kg and a velocity of 8.5 m/s to the right collides elastically with a 0.65kg car moving to
Sunny_sXe [5.5K]
We can do this with the conservation of momentum. The fact it is elastic means no KE is lost so we don't have to worry about the loss due to sound energy etc.

Firstly, let's calculate the momentum of both objects using p=mv:

Object 1:
p = 0.75 x 8.5 = 6.375 kgm/s

Object 2 (we will make this one negative as it is travelling in the opposite direction):
p = 0.65 x -(7.2) = -4.68 kgm/s

Based on this we know that the momentum is going to be in the direction of object one, and will be 6.375-4.68=1.695 kgm/s

Substituting this into p=mv again:

1.695 = (0.75+0.65) x v
Note I assume here the objects stick together, it doesn't specify - it should!

1.695 = 1.4v
v=1.695/1.4 = 1.2 m/s to the right (to 2sf)

When a sound wave moves through a medium such as air, the motion of the molecules of the medium is in what direction (with respe
Alchen [17]

A sound wave is a pressure wave that results from the vibration of the particles o the medium from the source. The motion of the particles in the medium is parallel to the direction of the energy transport. The type of wave formed by a sound wave is the longitudinal wave. A longitudinal wave is characterized by rarefactions. A longitudinal wave is a wave motion wherein the particles in the wave medium are displaced parallel to transport. When motion is detected from the source, the particle next to it vibrates from its rest position and a progressive change in phase vibration is observed at each particle within that wave. The result is that the energy is transported from one region to the other. These combined motions result in the movement of alternating regions of rarefaction in the direction of propagation.

A)If the rms value of the electric field in an electromagnetic wave is doubled, by what factor does the rms value of the magneti
Ghella [55]

A) The magnetic field doubles as well

The relationship between rms value of the electric field and rms value of the magnetic field for an electromagnetic wave is the following:

E_{rms}=cB_{rms}

where

E_rms is the magnitude of the electric field

c is the speed of light

B_rms is the magnitude of the magnetic field

From the equation, we see that the electric field and the magnetic field are directly proportional: therefore, if the rms value of the electric field is doubled, then the rms value of the magnetic field will double as well.

B) The intensity will quadruple

The intensity of an electromagnetic wave is given by

I=\frac{1}{2}c\epsilon_0 E_0^2

where

c is the speed of light

\epsilon_0 is the vacuum permittivity

E_0 is the peak intensity of the electric field

The rms value of the electric field is related to the peak value by

E_{rms}=\frac{E_0}{\sqrt{2}}

So we can rewrite the equation for the intensity as

I=c\epsilon_0 E_{rms}^2

we see that the intensity is proportional to the square of the rms value of the electric field: therefore, if the rms value of the electric field is doubled, the average intensity of the wave will quadruple.
