To give background to the reader about a certain event that had caused some sort of conflict or otherwise effected the character. Either way it would not be used unless it is needed to give a character or event a more significant meaning towards there actions or another.
We can assume Macbeth is feeling the emotion of "guilt" based on his vision of Banquo's ghost, since the ghost reminds him that he is responsible for the death.
