examine and analyze the relationship of church and state as it evolved from the fourth century a.d. through the reformation.
andrezito [222]

According to the Roman Catholic perspective, the church and the state each have their own government and are autonomous in their own spheres.

Constantine improved the status of Christianity during the fourth century, making it acceptable and supported. The State started becoming engaged in church-related issues. For instance, Emperors convened councils to try and resolve the church's doctrinal unity. Only Christianity was practiced in the new imperial capital of Constantinople; traditional rituals from other religions were not permitted. It appears that Constantine and his sons wanted to unify the empire through the church. The majority of Roman emperors following Constantine's dynasty were conservative Christians, but mostly as a way to maintain their hold on the empire.
