Let’s set one hour as the variable h.
We can write that 1/2 mile = 1/5h.
Your goal is to turn 1/5 h into just h. You can achieve this by multiplying both sides of the equation by 5.
h= 5/2 miles, or 2 1/2 miles. So the penguin would walk at the speed 5/2 miles per hour.

How many pints are in 10 gallons?
Ksju [112]
There are 4 quarts in a gallon, and 2 pints in each quart. so take 10 gallons and multiply it by 4 then by 2 which gives you 80 pints in a gallon. or realize that there are 8 pints in a gallon so multiply 10 by 8 which again gives you 80.

80 pints in a gallon

there are 16 ounces in a pound, but you are trying to get back to the larger unit, rather than the smaller one, so you do the opposite of what we did in the first problem. We do the opposite of multiplying which is dividing. we divide 112 ounces by 16 to get back to pounds. 112 divided by 16 is 7

there are 7 pounds in 112 ounces

What is the value of x?
adell [148]

again, we're assuming that both triangles are similar, and thus using proportions.

\stackrel{\textit{assuming the triangles are similar}}{\cfrac{x+1}{27}=\cfrac{5}{x-5}\implies x^2+x-5x-5=135}\implies x^2-4x-5=135 \\\\\\ x^2-4x-140=0\implies (x-14)(x+10)=0\implies x = \begin{cases} 14~\textit{\large \checkmark}\\ -10 \end{cases}

we do not use the -10, because whatever value "x" may be, can't be negative or even 0.
