Answer:

Oocyte refers to the female germ cell which is involved in the process of reproduction.  

In humans, the primary oocyte is diploid in nature, that is, it contains 46 chromosomes as it is formed by mitotic divisions of the oogonium.

In contrast, secondary oocyte is haploid in nature, that is, it contains only 23 chromosomes as it is formed from primary oocyte after it has completed its meiosis I.

Secondary oocyte then undergoes meiosis II to produce a mature ovum.
