Photosynthesis is defined as the process by which plants make their own food in the presence of light.
During the process of photosynthesis, light is trapped in chloroplast (chlorophyll) and at the same time in the presence of light the water molecules split into oxygen, hydrogen ions and free electrons.
The oxidation of water takes place in photosystem II and the hydrogen ions released in the thylakoid lumen of chlorophyll and contribute to the movement of ions across a semipermeable that results into ATP synthesis.
