It takes 8 minutes for Byron to fill the kiddie pool in the backyard using only a handheld hose. When his younger sister is impa

tient, Byron also uses the lawn sprinkler to add water to the pool so it is filled more quickly. If the hose and sprinkler are used together, it takes 5 minutes to fill the pool. Which equation can be used to determine r, the rate in parts per minute, at which the lawn sprinkler would fill the pool if used alone?

Answer:

Rate at which sprinkler will fill the pool is \frac{3}{40} per minute.

Step-by-step explanation:

It takes 8 minutes for Byron to fill the kiddie pool in the backyard with the use of handheld hose only.

So part of kiddie pool filled in one minute = \frac{1}{8}

When lawn sprinkler and handheld hose both were used to fill the pool,it took 5 minute to fill the pool together.

Now the part of pool filled in one minute = \frac{1}{5}

If the sprinkler fills the pool alone in r minutes then the pool filled per minute will be = \frac{1}{r}

Now we combine these three facts to form the equation.

\frac{1}{8}+\frac{1}{r}=\frac{1}{5}

\frac{1}{r}=\frac{1}{5}-\frac{1}{8}

\frac{1}{r}=\frac{8-5}{40}

\frac{1}{r}=\frac{3}{40}

r = \frac{40}{3}

Therefore, time taken by sprinkler alone will be 13.33 minutes and the rate per minute at which sprinkler will fill the pool is \frac{3}{40}.

Since you know that the hose will fill the whole pool in 8 minutes you know it will fill 1/8 of the pool per minute. In 5 minutes it will fill up 5/8 of the pool. This will make your equation 5/8 +5r=1. Solving for r will give you 3 parts/40 minutes

What is the equation of the line with a y-intercept of 4 and a point (8,8)?
Nookie1986 [14]

Answer:

The equation of the line with a y-intercept of 4 and a point (8,8) is y=\frac{1}{2} *x+4

Step-by-step explanation:

A linear equation can be expressed in the form

y = m * x + b

where x and y are coordinates of a point, m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. Since this equation describes a line in terms of its slope and its y-intercept, this equation is said to be in its slope-intercept form.

Graphically this equation represents a line.

In this case, you know:

  • The point (x,y)=(8,8)
  • Y-intercept= 4

Replacing:

8=m*8 +4

Solving:

8-4=m*8

4=m*8

4÷8= m

m=\frac{1}{2}

Then, <u><em>the equation of the line with a y-intercept of 4 and a point (8,8) is </em></u>y=\frac{1}{2} *x+4<u><em></em></u>

The ages of the guests on a museum tour are 32, 14, 18, 29, 65, 50, 48, 44, and 28. Find the five-number summary of the ages.
marishachu [46]

Answer:

Minimum = 14 , 1st Q = 23 , median = 32 , 3rd Q = 49 , maximum = 65

Step-by-step explanation:

* Lets explain what is the five-number summary

- The five-number summary for a set of data, are:

# The minimum

# First quartile

# Median

# Third quartile

# The maximum

∵ The ages of the guests are 32 , 14 , 18 , 29 , 65 , 50 , 48 , 44 , 28

# The steps to find them

1. Put your numbers in ascending order

∴ 14 , 18 , 28 , 29 , 32 , 44 , 48 , 50 , 65

2. Find the minimum and maximum for your data

∴ The minimum is 14

∴ The maximum is 65

3. Find the median where the median is the middle number.

∵ There are 9 ages then the middle age is the 5th age

∵ The 5th age is 32

∴ The median is 32

4. The first quartile is the median of the lower half of the data

∵ The lower half of the ages are 14 , 18 , 28 , 29

∵ The numbers of ages are even

∴ The first quartile is the average of the two middle ages

∴ The 1st quartile = (18 + 28)/2 = 23

∴ The 1st quartile is 23

5. The third quartile is the median of the upper half of the data

∵ The upper half of the ages are 44 , 48 , 50 , 65

∵ The numbers of ages are even

∴ The third quartile is the average of the two middle ages

∴ The 3rd quartile = (48 + 50)/2 = 49

∴ The 3rd quartile is 49

* The five-number summary of the ages are:

Minimum = 14 , 1st Q = 23 , median = 32 , 3rd Q = 49 , maximum = 65
