Robert E. Lee was the leader of the Confederacy. He capitulated after the Battle of Appomattox Court House (Virginia, U.S.) of April 9, 1865. Later on that day, Lee met with Ulysses S. Grant, the leader of the Union, in The Appomattox Court House in order to sign the documents that put an end to the American Civil War and established the surrender of the Confederacy to the Union.
