Of the 60 animals on a certain farm, 2/3 are either pigs or cows. How many of the animals are cows? (1) The farm has more than t
mario62 [17]

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

\frac{2}{3}of total= either cow or pigs

\frac{2}{3}of 60=

\frac{2}{3} X 60=40

Either pigs or cow = 40

(1) Let number of pigs be x

   then number of cows >twice of pigs = 2x

    number of pigs + number of cows  = 40

                number of cows = 40 -x

                   40-x > 2x

                   40 > 3x

               x < \frac{40}{3}

               x < 12.33

               nearest integral number is 12

               so its 12

              so number of pigs will be 12 so that number of cows = 40 -12 = 28

           which is more than twice of number of pigs

             28 > 2( 12)  = 24

     (2)   number of pigs + number of cows = 40

        for x>12

               number of cows = 40 -x

                  x > 12

                 -x < -12

             adding 40 both sides

            40-x < 40-12

           number of cows <28

A progression has a second term of 96 and a fourth term of 54. Find the first term of the progression of the progression is arit
Vladimir79 [104]

Here, we are required to find the first term of an arithmetic progression which has a second term of 96 and a fourth term of 54.

  • The first term of the progression which has a <em>second term</em> of 96 and a <em>fourth term</em> of 54 is; a = 117.

<em>In Arithmetic progression, the N(th) term of the progression is given by the formular;</em>

T(n) = a + (n-1)d

where;

  • a = first term

  • d = common difference.

  • n = nth term.

Therefore, from the question above;

  • T(2nd) = a + d = 96..............eqn(1)

  • and T(4th) = a + 3d = 54..........eqn(2)

By solving the system of equations simultaneously;

we subtract eqn. 2 from 1, then we have;

<em>-2d = 42</em>

Therefore, d = -21.

However, the question requests that we find the first term of the progression; From eqn. (1);

a + d = 96

Therefore,

  • a - 21 = 96
  • a = 96 + 21

Ultimately, the first term of the progression is therefore; a = 117
