A bird (mass m = 500 gram) is flying horizontally at a speed of v0 = 4.00 m/s, when it suddenly hits a stationary vertical bar a

t 50 cm below the top end of the bar. The bar is uniform with a mass M = 1.5 kg and a length l = 1.00 m. The bar is hinged at the bottom end and is free to rotate about this pivot point. The collision stuns the bird, which then drops vertically to the ground.
What is the angular velocity of the bar just after it is hit by the bird, and what is the angular velocity of the bar just as it reaches the ground?

Answer:

a) W = 2rad/s

b) W_f =5.78rad/s

Explanation:

part a. (the angular velocity of the bar just after it hit by the bird)

using the conservationof the angular momentum:

L_i = L_f

so:

MVd= IW

where M is the mass of the bird, V the velocity of the bird, d the lever arm, I the moment of inerta of the bar and W the angular velocity of the bar just after the collition.

Now we have to find the moment of inertia of the bar as:

I = \frac{1}{3}M_bL^2

Where M is the mass of the bar and L the length of the bar. So, I is equal to:

I = \frac{1}{3}(1.5kg)(1m)^2

I = 0.5 kg*m^2

Then, replacing values on the first equation, we get:

(0.5kg)(4m/s)(0.5m)= (0.5kg*m^2)W

Solving for W:

W = 2rad/s

part b. (the angular velocity of the bar just as it reaches the ground)

we will use the conservation of energy:

E_i = E_f

so:

M_bgh+\frac{1}{2}IW^2 = \frac{1}{2}IW_f^2

Where M_b is the mass of the bar, g is the gravity, h the altitude of the center of mass and W_f the angular velocity of the bar just as it reaches the ground.

Then, replacing values, we get:

(1.5kg)(9.8)(0.5m)+\frac{1}{2}(0.5)(2)^2 = \frac{1}{2}(0.5)W_f^2

Finally, solving for W_f:

W_f =5.78rad/s

The Problems: 1. Xavier starts at a position of 0 m and moves with an average speed of 0.50 m/s for 3.0 seconds. He normally mov
NemiM [27]

Answer:

(1). His final position is 1.5 m.

(2). The final position of the hedgehog is 3 m.

(3). The final position of the tortoise

(4). Her race time is 80 sec.

(5). It take to finish in 5 hr.

Explanation:

(1). Given that,

Initial position = 0 m

Average speed = 0.50 m/s

Time = 3.0 s

We need to calculate the final position

Using formula of average speed

v_{av}=\dfrac{x_{f}+x_{i}}{t}

Where, x_{f} = final position

x_{i} = Initial position

t = total time

Put the value into the formula

0.50=\dfrac{x_{f}+0}{3.0}

x_{f}=0.50\times3.0

x_{f}=1.5\ m

(2). Given that,

Initial position = 0 m

Average speed = 0.75 m/s

Time = 4.0 s

We need to calculate the final position

Using formula of average speed

v_{av}=\dfrac{x_{f}+x_{i}}{t}

Put the value into the formula

0.75=\dfrac{x_{f}+0}{4.0}

x_{f}=0.75\times4.0

x_{f}=3\ m

(3). Given that,

Average speed = 1.25 m/s

Time = 3.0 sec

Initial position = 1.0 m

We need to calculate the final position

Using formula of average speed

v=\dfrac{x_{f}+x_{i}}{t}

Put the value into the formula

1.25=\dfrac{x_{f}+1.0}{3.0}

x_{f}=1.25\times3.0-1.0

x_{f}=2.75\ m

(4). Given that,

Average speed = 1.25 m/s

Distance = 100 m

We need to calculate the time

Using formula of time

t=\dfrac{d}{v}

Put the value into the formula

t=\dfrac{100}{1.25}

t=80 sec

(5). Given that,

Average speed = 5 miles/hr

Suppose, distance = 25 miles

We need to calculate the time

Using formula of time

t=\dfrac{d}{v}

Put the value into the formula

t=\dfrac{25}{5}

t=5\ hr

Hence, (1). His final position is 1.5 m.

(2). The final position of the hedgehog is 3 m.

(3). The final position of the tortoise

(4). Her race time is 80 sec.

(5). It take to finish in 5 hr.

A uniform disk is constrained to rotate about an axis passing through its center and perpendicular to the plane of the disk. If
katrin2010 [14]

A uniform disk is constrained to rotate about an axis passing through its center and perpendicular to the plane of the disk. If the disk starts from rest and is then brought in contact with a spinning rubber wheel, we observe that the disk gradually begins to rotate too. If after 35 s of contact with this spinning rubber wheel, the disk has an angular velocity of 4.0 rad/s, find the average angular acceleration that the disk experiences. (Assume the positive direction is in the initial direction of rotation of the disk. Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.)

Assume after 35 s of contact with this spinning rubber wheel, the disk has an angular velocity of 11.0 rad/s.

Answer:

385 rad

Explanation:

The expression for the angular acceleration of a disk that is in contact with a spinning wheel can be given as:

\alpha = \frac{\delta \omega}{\delta t}

where \delta\omega = \omega_f - \omega_i

\alpha = \frac{ \omega_f-\omega_i}{\delta t}

\alpha = \frac{ 4.0 rad/s-0 rad/s}{35}

\alpha =0.14 rad/s^2

Angular displacement of a disk can be calculated by using the formula:

\theta = \omega t

substituting 11.0 rad/s for \omega and t = 35 s ; we have:

\theta = 11.0 rad/s * 35 s

\theta = 385 rad
