A steel rod with a length of l = 1.55 m and a cross section of A = 4.89 cm2 is held fixed at the end points of the rod. What is

the size of the force developing inside the steel rod when its temperature is raised by ∆T = 28.0 K? The coefficient of linear expansion for steel is α = 1.17×10-5 1/K, and the Young modulus of steel is E = 200.0 GPa.

Answer:

The size of the force developing inside the steel rod is 32039.28 N

Explanation:

Given;

length of the steel rod, L = 1.55 m

cross sectional area of the steel, A = 4.89 cm²

temperature change, ∆T = 28.0 K

coefficient of linear expansion for steel, α = 1.17 × 10⁻⁵ 1/K

Young modulus of steel, E = 200.0 GPa.

Extension of the steel is given as;

α ∆T L = FL / AE

α ∆T = F/AE

F = AEα ∆T

F = ( 4.89 x 10⁻⁴)(200 x 10⁹)(1.17 × 10⁻⁵)(28.0 K)

F = 32039.28 N

Therefore, the size of the force developing inside the steel rod when its temperature is raised, is 32039.28 N

Which state will not change shape or volume when moved to a different container?
grandymaker [24]

Ans: C) Solid

Explanation: We will look into different states

A) Liquid : In liquid state molecules are not very tightly bound to each other. So, they have no fixed shape . They take the shape of container in which they are kept.

B) Gas : In gaseous state molecules are very loosely bound so they have very less intermolecular forces so they have much more freedom of movement.So, it will be also not correct.

D) Plasma : In Plasma state approximately equal amount of positive or negative charges are there, although its a type of hot ionized gaseous state but but due its different properties then other gases it is considered the 'fourth' state. And it also can't maintain it's definite shape and volume.So we will eliminate that also.

C) Solid : Finally we are left with solid state. Here molecules are tightly bound to each other . So, it doesn't change its shape and volume when kept in different container.

So 'Solid' state is the correct choice.

Hope it helps!!!

For a centrifugal compressor, the flow at the exit of the blade (state 2) has a velocity of 250 m/s with an angle of 15 degrees
shtirl [24]

The velocity at the end of vaneless space(state 3) is 965.92 m/s

What is centrifugal compressor?

It increases kinetic energy to the airstream using a rotating element and then converts it into potential energy in the form of pressure.

Temperature at state 2, T₂ =T₀ + c/2Cp

Substitute T₀ =450K, c=250m/s, Cp =1005, we get

T₂ =418.90K

From the velocity triangle, sinβ₂ =c₂/v₂

v₂ = 250/sin (90°-75°) = 965.92 m/s

Thus, the velocity at the end of vaneless space is 965.92 m/s.
