Both Europe and Japan had a "cast system" you could say, where peasants worked the land that the nobles owned. (The Japanese had their own terms for the people, I just can't remember them.) During this time, Europe had knights and these Knights had a code called Chivalry. Over in Japan, there were Samurai with a very similar code which was called Bushido. Hope this helps.

The battle you're thinking of is the battle of Shiloh, also known as the battle of Pittsburg Landing in 1862, where general Grant and his army were encamped at Pittburg Landing (hence the name), where they arrived the day before the battle. On the next day, Aprlil 6th, general Grant and his army were surprised early in the morning, before 6 am, by a Confederate army under the leadership of Gen. Johnson, who was in fact killed during the battle.
South Carolina was the first state to declare secession because of him because they believed, just like the nullification crisis, that Lincoln's policies were favoring north and were Against the south. Unlike the Jackson era where the thing in question was tariffs, here it was resolving about slavery.<span />
