The British policy of enforcing the writs of assistance caused much anger amongst American colonists. The statement that is the BEST description of the term writs of assistance is "search warrant."

For one reason or the other, the British monarchy did not trust its colonies at all. After the French and Indian War, the English monarchy decided to exert a more restrictive control over its colonies. Some colonies kept on trading with other countries during that war and that did not like the English government. So that is when the English imposed the writs of assistance, that were documents to search warrant. This documents permitted customs authorities to search any home, building, ship or warehouse suspected to contain goods from other countries.
