Answer:

Independence Day in the Philippines is observed on June 12. It commemorates the country´s independence from Spain.  It was proclaimed by Filipino rebel  leader Emilio Aguinaldo. The Spanish-American War started in April 1898. On May 1, 1898 the US Navy Asiatic Squadron of Commodore George Dewey confronted the Spanish Pacific Fleet  and annihilated it at the Battle of Manila Bay. Aguinaldo made an agreement with US forces to help Americans in the war against the Spanish. His forces took many towns and sorrounded the Spanish in Manila. He proclaimed the Filipino Independence on June 12, but it failed to gain international recognition. Spain and the United States signed a treaty that resulted in the formal annexation of the Philippines by the US. The US granted the Philippines independence on July 4, 1946, following the end of WWII.
