Information on a prospective investment for Wells Financial Services is given below. Period 1 2 3 4 Loan Funds Available 3000 70

Expenses, or cash outflows, in each period must include repayment of the previous period's loan plus 8.5% interest, and the current payroll payment. In addition, to end the planning horizon, investment income from period 4 (at 110% of the investment) must be sufficient to cover the loan plus interest from period 4. The difference in these two quantities represents net income, and is to be maximized. How much should be borrowed and how much should be invested each period?

Answer:

Let Lt = Loan in period t , t= 1...4

It = Investment in period t, t= 1...4

These are the decision variables

The objective is to maximize the net income which is the difference between Loan and investment in period 4

Investment income in period 4 = 110% of I4 = 1.1I4

Expense and loan in period 4 = 1.085 L4

So,

Maximize Z = 1.1I4-1.085 L4

Constraints

L1<= 3000

I1<= 4500

L1-I1= 100( Payroll payment)

L2<= 7000

I2<= 8000

L2+1.1I1-1.085L1-I2=120

L3<=4000

I3<= 6000

L3+1.12I2-1.085L2-I3=150

L4<=5000

I4<=7500

L4+1.13*I3-1.085L3-I4=100

1.10I4-1.085L4>=0

Lt, It>=0

Assume Marigold Corp. deposits $90000 with First National Bank in an account earning interest at 4% per annum, compounded semi-a
erastova [34]

Answer:

a) $101354

Explanation:

To calculate the future balance of the interest-earning account use following formula

FV = PV x ( 1 + r )^n

Where

FV = Future value = Balance of Interest-earning account after 3 years = ?

PV = present value = Amounr deposited in the account = $90,000

r = Periodic interest rate = 4% x 6/12 = 2%

n = Numbers of periods = Numbers of years x Compounding periods per year = 3 years x 2 periods per year = 6 periods

Placing values in the formula

FV = $90,000 x ( 1 + 2% )^6

FV = $101,354

Agreed to work together to control the price of domestic steel.

The chief executive officers of the major U.S. steel makers would most likely be prosecuted under the antitrust laws if they agreed to work together to control the price of domestic steel.

What are the objectives of antitrust law?

The Sherman Act, the nation's first antitrust statute, was enacted by Congress in 1890 as a "comprehensive charter of economic liberty designed to maintain open and unhindered competition as the rule of commerce." The antitrust laws generally prohibit unauthorized mergers and business practices, leaving it to the courts to determine which ones are prohibited based on the specific facts of each case.

From the era of horses and buggies to the modern digital era, courts have applied antitrust rules to evolving marketplaces. Nevertheless, for more than a century, the antitrust laws have had the same fundamental goal: to safeguard the competitive process for the benefit of consumers, by ensuring that there are strong incentives for businesses to operate effectively, keep prices low, and keep quality high.

The three core federal antitrust laws:

 • Any "monopolization, attempted monopolization, conspiracy, or combination to monopolize" is prohibited by the Sherman Act, as is "every contract, combination, or conspiracy in restraint of trade."
 • The Sherman Act has harsh penalties that can be applied. The Sherman Act is a criminal law as well, and although the majority of enforcement actions are civil, anyone or any company that violates it may face legal action from the Department of Justice.
 • "Unfair techniques of competition" and "unfair or deceptive activities or practices" are prohibited by the Federal Trade Commission Act.
