#1) Popes were and still are the main preast of the catholic church, in older times they were very famous for causing alot of politcal problems and some kings like King Henry the VI even broke away from him to divorce a wife which caused major problems in the political and religion era at the time that later effected future culture everywhere in the world. To conclude, popes are pretty important.

#2) People believed that god was speaking through the pope, in other words, everything the pope said the people took it very seriously. If the pope and the kind of England sat next to eachother they would have the same amount of power over the people.
