X + y = 8
x - y = 12
--------------add
2x = 20
x = 20/2
x = 10

x + y = 8
10 + y = 8
y = 8 - 10
y = -2

let the two numbers be: x y

x + y = 8

x - y = 12

Isolate the x in x + y = 8. Subtract y from both sides

x + y (-y) = 8 (-y)

x = 8 - y

Plug in 8 - y for x in the other equation

x - y = 12

(8 - y) - y = 12

Simplify

8 -2y = 12

Isolate the y. Subtract 8 from both sides, and then divide by -2

8 (-8) - 2y = 12 (-8)

-2y = 4

-2y/-2 = 4/-2

y = -2

Plug in -2 for y in one of the equations

x + y = 8

x + (-2) = 8

Simplify. Isolate the x. Add 2 to both sides

x - 2 (+2) = 8 (+2)

x = 10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

x = 10, y = -2 is your answer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hope this helps

Horizontal asymptote
vodomira [7]

Answer:

H.A.=4

Step-by-step explanation:

If the bottom equation is factored, you get (x+1)(x-4)

If the V.A. is -1 ( gotten by putting [x+1] equal to zero I'm guessing) then the H.A. can be gotten by putting (x-4) equal to zero.

Also, I graphed it.

Drey makes $10 an hour plus $15 an hour for every hour of overtime. Overtime hours are any hours more than 40 hours for the week
gregori [183]
Part A:  W = 10x

Part B:  S = 400 + 15y

Part C:  490 = 400 +15y
              -400  -400
              90 = 15y
              6 = y,  so he worked a total of 46 hours.
