Alexander the Great died suddenly at a very young age and with no aparent heir to his enormous empire. This sudden death threw the empire into chaos, and many people claimed the throne. This rivalry affected the Macedonians, and eventually led to the collapse of their unity. A war ensued, and 40 years later, the Hellenistic world was divided in four stable areas: Ptolemaic Egypt, Seleucid Mesopotamia and Central Asia, Attalid Anatolia, and Antigonid Macedon. These dynasties were led by Alexander the Great's former generals.
