ancestors - direct object

homes - direct object

A direct object is the thing the action verb addresses. What do people honor? ancestors. The action verb honors first addresses the ancestors. What do families clean? homes. The action verb first addresses the homes.

children - indirect object

relatives - indirect object

An indirect object is the recipient of the direct object. In the sentence "People give children red envelopes". The action verb give first addresses the envelopes THEN it goes to the children. The children receive the action of giving envelopes. In the sentence "Families cook dinner for their relatives." The relatives receive the dinner. Dinner is a direct object because it is first cooked. Then the dinner goes to the relatives.

Which excerpt from "The Lottery" most strongly suggests that the lottery tradition has become less significant than it once was?
katovenus [111]
The best answer here would be the last one: "Some places have already quit lotteries," Mrs. Adams said. This is the best answer because it implies that the lottery isn't as necessary as it once was. If it was needed, the implication is that they would still be going on in the area and not forgotten or not done.

While the others hint at the same thing, they aren't the best answers because they talk about the lottery overall, but only insomuch as it pertains to the lottery itself, to fill in the details of it.
