Mauryan and Gupta were alike in many sense. Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism continued to flourish during the two dynasties and this reflects their broad religious outlook. Secondly, they acquired almost the same territories although Mauryan was a big one. Both empires have a flourishing economy. Thus Gupta were called as true successors of Mauryan.
