P53 is a protein that blocks the cell cycle if DNA is damaged. It binds to cyclin and cdk, blocking entry into S phase. If the d

amage is severe, this protein can cause apoptosis or cell death. Exposure to smoke, especially from smoking directly, is one of the most frequent causes of mutations to p53. When fluid from the lungs of smokers is analyzed, it often contains cells with p53 mutations.
What is the MOST LIKELY relationship between p53 mutation and the development of lung cancer?

A) p53 mutations would cause more lung cells to die.

B) p53 mutations would cause uncontrolled cell growth.

C) p53 mutations would prevent damaged cells from dying.

D) p53 mutations cause cells to enter M phase more frequently.
