The unnamed protagonist of "To Build A Fire" by Jack London seems to be a man of strong will who would go through with his plan. When he first started to meet his friends at the next settlement, he was warned about the dangers of travelling with the heavy snow and the bad weather. Ignoring all warnings, he went ahead, and even deceiving himself into thinking that he's making great progress. Even when he knows he's already got frostbite, and he knows he should have cancelled his plan, he till moves forward in spite of the bad weather. This conflict of man versus nature is best represented by the man and his ego.
