A fear appeal<span> is a persuasive message that attempts to arouse fear in order to divert behavior through the threat of impending danger or harm. It presents a risk, presents the vulnerability to the risk, and then may, or may not suggest a form of protective action. Hope this helps 
and example could be the tobacco commercials, and how they try and convince us the views not to smoke</span><span />

Fear appeal is scaring people into not doing certain things. hm one fear appeal would be maybe a commercial showing a boy on a subway train being kidnapped because his mom was away from him and it would scare mom's not to leave their kids alone.
