After World War 2, the Soviet Union and the United States began to compete economically. It was a battle of communism (the Soviet Union) against democracy (the United States). As time went on, communism began to spread in Eastern Europe. The US did not want communism to spread so they did everything in their power to prevent the spread of communism (especially in the west).
