Depending on whether the child has had previous activities, like preschooling or Sunday school programs, the first reaction that the child will have to his/her new environment, and to spending so many hours away from his/her familiar surroundings and familiar people, is to first observe from the sidelines as the new world develops in front, assessing and observing especially other kids like them, and how they interact. This is called a period of adaptation. Once this first observation and shyness is passed, the child will attempt to start mixing with his/her peers and will start gaining more security as he/she develops social skills with people outside of his/her immediate and familiar circles.
