Namely Jamestown in Virginia became the first permanent English settlement in the modern United States. In order to accelerate the pace of colonization of Virginia, the London campaign that led it in 1618 promised fifty acres of Virginian land to anyone who wanted to move there. The settlement of America was largely due to the system of land allotments. This settlement became the beginning of intensive development of the Southern territories.
