The Freedom Riders were a civil rights group that rode interstate buses so they could challenge the rules that segregated public buses. When they reached Birmingham bus terminal they were met by a group of whites that belonged to the KKK, they were armed and attacked the riders. The brutality against the Freedom Riders was widely publicized and with it, more Americans were aware of how African Americans were treated in the South, it also pushed the Federal government to intervene. JFK and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy demanded that the riders got protection.
